Anna University (AU), formerly Perarignar Anna University of Technology (PAUT), is a technical university in Tamil Nadu, India. It's been ranked 7th[3] best university in India. The university encompasses within it one of the oldest technical institutes in the world and has a history spanning 218 years (As of 2012). It was renamed 'Anna University' on 4 September 1978 as a unitary university, named after C. N. Annadurai. It became an affiliating university in 2001, absorbing about 250 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Between 2007 and 2010, it was split into six universities, namely, Anna University, Chennai, Anna University, Chennai - Taramani Campus, Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Coimbatore, Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Tirunelveli, and Anna University Chennai - Regional Office, Madurai. On September 14, 2011, a bill was passed to merge back the universities. Anna University has once again become a single affiliating university for engineering colleges all over Tamil Nadu from August 1, 2012.[4]

[hide]History[edit]
Formation[edit]
- 1978:
- The Government of Tamil Nadu, Dr. v. Ramesh established Anna University of Technology (previous name of Anna University) on 4 September 1978 through the The Perarignar Anna University of Technology Act, 1978(Tamil Nadu Act 30 of 1978).
- The new university formed with the erstwhile University of Madras's Faculty of Engineering and Technology (i.e. College of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, Madras Institute of Technology and the School of Architecture and Planning of Chennai City) as nucleus of university.
- The institutes became constituent colleges of the newly formed university. It was named after former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. N. Annadurai.
- 1982: In 1982 the name Anna University was adopted, removing the words "Perarignar" and "Technology".[5]
Restructuring[edit]
- 2001: In 2001, under the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001, AU became an affiliating university, taking under its wings almost all the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. This included six government engineering colleges, three government-aided private institutions, and 426 self-financing colleges.[citation needed]
- 2007: On 1 February 2007 as a result of a Government of Tamil Nadu decision, AU was split into six universities, namely, Anna University, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore,Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai.[6] The institutes were formally created between 2007 and 2010.
- 2011: On September 14, 2011, a bill was passed to merge back the universities.[7] However, as of February 2012, the separate universities are still operating.[8]
- 2012: Since August 2012, all of the Anna University of Technology - University Campuses and Anna University Affiliated Anna University College are merged with Anna University Chennai. Now it is called as:

Scrapping of CET[edit]
The Common Entrance Test, conducted over the years by Anna University in the name of the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE), for admission to professional courses in the state was abolished in 2006.[9] Starting in the academic year 2007-08, students were admitted to engineering colleges on the basis of their Plus-Two marks and their caste.[10]
The reason stated for the abolition of the CET is that it places urban students at an advantage over rural students and causes significant expense burden on poor and/or rural students. This has resulted in substantially greater percentage of students from rural and / or poor backgrounds in obtaining admission to institutions of excellence predominantly in urban areas. It has also increased the burden of the teaching staff in such institutions to bring such students upto speed on par with their urban peers and led to perceptible downfall in their placement percentages over the years.
TV station[edit]
ISRO has permitted Anna University to start a separate TV channel by providing equipment. The university has established Tamil Nadu’s first Interactive Satellite Terminal under the Ku Band ofEDUSAT and identified as one of the channel partners in the Southern region for EDUSAI Live interactive Audio-Video lecture programmes are transmitted through Ku Band and it helps to conduct free examinations in all its affiliated colleges.
Campus[edit]
The university's main campus is situated in the southern part of Chennai and extends over 110 acres (45,154 m²)[citation needed] adjoining the Adyar River and the Raj Bhavan. It contains theCollege of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, and School of Architecture and Planning. The campus houses three technical departments of the University of Madras. TheMadras Institute Of Technology at Chromepet constitutes the second campus and extends over 200,000 m².[citation needed] The third campus of the university is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar.[citation needed]
